We are delighted to announce that we have a launch date for the CD of William's music, which was recorded at the end of October. This will take place at 7pm on Thursday 30th March at Temple Church.
There will be a short performance of some of the music on the CD, followed by drinks, one or two (short!) speeches and the opportunity to purchase copies, with all proceeds going to Sarcoma UK.
All but one movement on the CD were first performed at St Magnus, and the recording is a testimony to how much William grew and developed as a musician in his 10 years at the church, a job he always loved. The music shows quite clearly the depth of his spritual vision.
We didn't realise it at the time of the recording but there is a clear Easter theme to the music. The Vigil Mass is the most distinctive and characteristic composition, written for the Easter Vigil in 2015. A new recording of the Easter anthem, "The Good Shepherd has arisen" also features and the CD finishes with "Come Down O Love Divine", a Pentecost anthem, marking the end of Eastertide.
The music has a quality of hope, freedom and beauty, although much of it was written in the face of an impossible situation, and it speaks of a depth of spirituality and humanity that William had, and a Christian faith that was life long.
Several singers from the St Magnus choir, past and present, were in the choir that William had hand-picked.
It promises to be a wonderful event and we would love to see as many of you there as possible.
We think William would be very proud of the disc, and we are very pleased that it is being promoted under the Novum label - that of New College Choir, Oxford, where William began his choral singing.
